Today, I am pleased to introduce Tomoko from the company Toïro® who agreed to answer our questions to present her ingenious and aesthetic compost kit for the kitchen.
We initially started selling traditional handicrafts to support women artisans in Algeria. However, in early 2020, Covid-19 made imports and exports difficult. We therefore launched a new project producing compost made in France for the French market. Our Japanese parent company has a business specializing in composting. Building on this expertise and the experience with compost already developed in Japan, we worked with experts to develop a compost adapted to the French climate.
It's a simple and practical compost that can be easily used, whether you live in a house or an apartment. This compost bin has an aesthetically pleasing design, suitable for use on a balcony or in a kitchen. It does not give off any unpleasant odors and therefore does not attract insects; it can be used by everyone, even those who have never made compost.
There are no earthworms in our compost, which is what makes it so strong because earthworms can be sensitive to certain harmful additions such as orange or lemon peels.
Unlike Bokashi-type compost, which is in a closed environment without oxygen, our kitchen compost with substrate (bio-charcoal + coconut fiber) allows the activation of microorganisms in aerobic conditions, that is to say in an oxygenated environment, which allows our kitchen scraps to be transformed into humus rich in nutrients for plants; the substrate absorbs liquids, so there is no loss of nutrients and no rotting effect.
It is recommended to mix the compost with each new addition of waste and to limit the amount of waste to approximately 400g per day.
The founder of this LFC compost, a Japanese woman Yuko TAIRA, has been developing and popularizing this type of compost for 25 years, to reduce the volume of waste treated by the community while reducing its carbon footprint and thus recycling its waste to make green manure and thus grow its own vegetables in a healthy way.
More and more of us are mobilizing to change our consumption habits and adopt a lifestyle more in line with the desire to preserve our planet.
Many people use different types of compost, which helps to improve our livelihoods, our soils and a resource economy.
This is an initiative for a sustainable future that we can easily do on a daily basis, so I would like composting to be accessible to everyone, even when you don't have a garden.
I try to use things carefully for a long time without making unnecessary purchases. In the garden, I reuse items destined for the trash to plant vegetable seeds, such as soy milk cartons, tomato cans, cardboard boxes, etc.In urban areas like Paris, many households lack vegetable gardens or allotments. For urban residents, we want to partner with local farmers to implement a compost exchange program for locally grown vegetables. We aim to contribute not only to reducing food waste but also to promoting local consumption.
If you too would like to compost your organic waste with ease, find the LFC Toiro® compost kit available in our online shop HERE.
